EXTRA CREDIT

 

1. Point out a printed error Dr. Wall has made OR an error in one of our textbooks.

2. Choose your FIVE favorite proverbs from this list and explain why they are meaningful to you.

3. Check out the BLOOPERS in this slide show. Write down:

            a. which is the funniest

            b. which would be the most embarrassing to commit

            c. which one you didn't understand

4. Find a public blooper (not just from the Internet) similar to those in the above slide show and email Dr. Wall a photo.

5. Joey doesn't understand a usage of quotation marks in this episode of Friends.

  • When people do this, it is sometimes called "air quotes." Explain the purpose of air quotes.

6. How do you pronounce the letter "a"?

7. Attend a tutoring workshop or a CalWorks workshop and write a paragraph about what was covered.

8. Watch three short video clips. Then, in one paragraph, tell me what you learn about Sir Ken Robinson's philosophy of education.

9. Record a video oral presentation on a language topic.

10. With a partner, record a video and present this dialogue to the class: Fatherhood by Bill Cosby.

  • There are a couple of lines for the "narrator." One of you will have to do these.

11. Take the Tech-Off Challenge!

12. Write an original short story about this topic.

13. Write an alliterative letter covering all 26 letters of the alphabet!  Here is a sample.  The first word is always an adverb; the second is an adjective.

14. Find (and correct) at least four grammar or spelling errors on the sign in this cartoon.

15. Discover your personal dialect with this short quiz. Write a short paragraph explaining your results.

16. Watch Weird Al's four-minute Word Crimes. Then write a short paragraph explaining what was the funniest or most interesting part. If there is something you don't understand, let me know and I'll be happy to explain it.

17. Watch Why We Fight, a 2005 movie available from Netflix, and write a short paragraph about one new thing you learned.

18. View this cartoon.  Then visit the fast checkout line at the following grocery stores, record how it is named (e.g. "Under 15 items"), and evaluate whether the name is grammatically correct.

19. Participate in an approved extra-curricular activity. Write a paragraph about what you learned and observed.
